REVIEW: Marvel Legends Cloak & Dagger Figures (SP//DR Series)

The clock is ticking on getting reviews for 2018 Marvel Legends figures posted in their “birth” year, so today I’m doing a two-for-one special with my Marvel Legends Cloak and Dagger Review! When it comes to the upper-echelon of Marvel supporting characters who have never been able to support their own series long-term, Cloak and Dagger have to be considered near the very top of that list. As you might expect, these are two separate figures you’ll have to buy individually. Are ML Cloak & Dagger worth the 35-40 bucks?

Marvel Legends Cloak & Dagger Figures ReviewIt almost blows my mind that it’s taken a decade and a half and hundreds of releases before Toybiz or Hasbro decided to try their hands at 6” Cloak and Dagger Legends, but the good news is that the semi-iconic tag team is finally on shelves and joining our collections!

Cloak and Dagger are best known for their many appearances in various Spider-Man comics over the years, so it’s no surprise to see them in the Spider-Man Legends SP//DR Series. They’re each packed at one per case, but have been a breeze to snag online for MSRP or below. How’d they turn out? Read on…

Broken Foot on Spider-Man Legends Dagger FigureFirst off, full disclosure: Hasbro QC has done right by me for pretty much all of 2018, but I finally had a broken figure straight out of the package with the Dagger Marvel Legends. Her foot snapped off completely as soon as I opened her, but rather than waiting for a replacement, I went ahead and reviewed her as-is with the foot not attached to her at all.

Marvel Legends Dagger Figure PackagedI won’t condemn Dagger for the breakage—these things happen—but don’t expect any extreme poses for her in this review. And be careful with your own figure of her, as it’s likely her white plastic may be brittle for more than just me.

Back of Marvel Legends Dagger 6 Inch FigureAside from her left foot being severed from her body, Dagger is a solid—if basic—figure. She’s got the open “spell-casting” hands we’ve seen a multitude of times before, along with the standard female body that’s missing double-jointed elbows and any kind of waist articulation.

Close-Up of Dagger Marvel Legends 6" FigureWhile her articulation is predictably a bit sub-par, I love the elegant white look of the figure and the serene facial expression. I get a real Galadriel vibe from this toy, which is something is a first for a Marvel figure.

Hasbro Spider-Man Marvel Legends Dagger Effects PieceWhile the Hasbro Dagger figure itself is dominated by preexisting tooling, she does come with a new accessory: a curved effects piece with three light knives attached. The arced shape and pearly white color are both comics-accurate, and it’s far too rare that we get new effects pieces. Win.

Cloak Marvel Legends Figure PackagedMarvel Legends Cloak is another figure that has plenty of shortcomings, but I still dig for the most part. Hasbro utilized semi-translucent plastic for the cloak itself and also parts of the body, which gives Cloak an otherworldly, shadowy look. It’s really cool when you can see some rays of light shining through him.

Close-Up of Marvel Legends SP//DR Series Cloak 6" FigureI also think the head sculpt and blanked-out eyes on Tyrone look really groovy—intimidating, but with a feeling of cosmic power (a la Heimdall). The portrait here really works for me, although I know some folks might have preferred a more old-timey head without any facial hair.

Cloak Hasbro Marvel Legends Six Inch Figure ReviewUnfortunately, the rigid plastic cloak blocks almost all upper-body articulation on Cloak. While it’s a rubbery plastic and not hard, it’s enough to constrain Cloak’s articulation to a bare minimum. His arms and hands can only move the slightest bit without unbuckling the cloak, and while the legs can move around, it’s hard to find poses for them that make sense with the static arms and cape.

Marvel Legends Cloak Figure ReviewThe one bonus feature selling-point of this pair was that you could remove Cloak’s body to pose Dagger inside of the extra-dimensional cloak, but that unfortunately doesn’t work as well as I’d hoped.

Marvel Legends Cloak Figure Body Separate from HeadThere’s no way to connect the head to the cloak once the body is removed, so it’s a constant battle to keep the head from just tipping over and falling off.

Marvel Legends Dagger and Cloak Figure ReviewI think this was a really fun idea for a special way of displaying Cloak and Dagger, but the final execution is a bit lacking.

Marvel Legends Cloak and Dagger Review 6" Figures 2018Overall: Broken foot aside, I’m quite happy with the Dagger 6” figure. The new effects piece looks good, and she has a clean look to her and a pretty face. Meanwhile, Cloak’s sculpt and semi-translucent plastic are well-done, although his articulation is almost non-existent and his head can only balance precariously when the body is removed from the cloak.

It’s insane how long it’s taken for this duo to get done as super-articulated 6” figures, but Hasbro has done a very nice—if not quite perfect—job with this pairing. I’m happy to have this twosome and don’t regret buying them, but I do think there’s still room for improved iterations of these characters.
