ADVANCE REVIEW: Monogram Godzilla Series 3 Figural Bag Clips

Following our review of Monogram‘s second series of Godzilla figural bag clips released last Fall (read our review HERE), the King of Monsters returns for even more kaiju-stompin’ action with Series 3! Just in time for his big battle with King Kong on March 31st (which will receive its OWN Godzilla vs. Kong bag clip series – stay tuned for our advance review on those!), Godzilla Series 3 is another deep-dive into imaginative ‘Zilla movie monsters – some old-school classics, others focused on Godzilla’s more modern “Millenium” movie run.

That’s because the big green guy is featured in this collection with his Godzilla 2000 “Millenium” look! While it’s not totally clear in cute chibi form, the angry teeth do give some indication to ‘Zilla’s more-angry 2000 update.

Starting off with familiar faces (for long-time Godzilla movie fans) is the appearance in this wave of Hedorah (aka the “Smog Monster” from 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah), the first appearance of the arm-clawed Gigan (1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan), and the giant lobster (yum, buttered lobster tail) Ebirah (1968’s Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster).

Other true Godzilla “classics” include Anguirus (1955’s Godzilla Raids Again) and the funky god kaiju, King Caesar (1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla).

The bat/bug-like  Megaguirus was new to me as I’m not as familiar with the Millenium Godzilla movies. You’ll find him (it) in 2000’s Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. Megaguirus makes a nice bag clip bookend to Godzilla Wave 2’s winged Battra.

Other 2000 kaiju additions include Monster X (2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars) and the massive Orga (1999’s Godzilla 2000: Millennium), a warped and deformed version of Godzilla created from Godzilla’s very own DNA! For those feeling the blind bags for character identification, King Caesar and Orga are the largest in this assortment; nice and meaty palm-sized figures.

For exclusive chase figures, Monogram again looks at Godzilla’s future. These include Shin Godzilla as seen in Toho’s 2016 bizarre ‘Zilla relaunch of the same name and the snake-like creature Manda from Godzilla: Final Wars coiled around the submarine battleship Atragon (also known as Gotengo)! Two odd, unexpected choices for rare chase figures, but I dig!

With their third Godzilla bag clip collection, Monogram continues to deliver awesome creatures from the King of Monster’s rich film history. While Godzilla Series 3 has a more Millenium focus – it balances the new with the old by bringing in some true ‘Zilla kaiju cult classics. Each long-time Godzilla fan has their favorites, but for me, this wave was all about Hedorah (a monster made of pollution, so unique at the time!), Ebirah (just because it’s one of Godzilla’s cheesiest enemies), and Gigan- the clawed creature ever-evolving (and consistently looking cooler) through-out Godzilla’s long movie run (not pictured above is my figure of Modified Gigan – the cool chainsaw -armed upgrade from Godzilla: Final Wars).

Godzilla Series 3 is due out in early March at many fine retailers such as Hot Topic.
