SDCC 2018 Exclusive Marvel Legends Netflix Defenders Set!

Believe it or not, San Diego Comic Con 2018 begins in under one month! Even so, we hadn’t heard am official peep regarding this year’s Hasbro Marvel Legends exclusives. At least—not until today! After accidentally leaking the set last week, this morning the Hollywood Reporter posted the first official look at the Marvel Legends Netflix Defenders Box Set including the first Netflix Colleen Wing and Iron Fist figures!

SDCC 2018 Exclusive Marvel Legends Defenders Figures Set Box Subway CarI was holding off on posting about this set after the initial photo came out last week, hoping that more details would be forthcoming shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, that tweet from The Hollywood Reporter was the sum totality of what we knew about this set up until today, so I apologize for those who came here looking to hear me discuss this set previously and had to wait.

But now that the set has finally been officially announced, I can post my impressions with a clear conscience! And personally, I think Hasbro is getting a sort of bad rap with all the negativity I’ve been seeing spread about this Netflix Defenders SDCC Box Set.

The various Netflix Series are all monumentally popular with a larger audience than collect Marvel Legends figures normally, so having a con exclusive box set to lure in potential now collectors from the 130,000+ SDCC attendees makes excellent sense to me. San Diego Comic Con is probably the single best place to launch a set of this nature, in my opinion.

While technically there are only two new characters in this set, there’s at least something new about every 6” figure included. Here’s my thoughts on the quintet…

Marvel Legends Defenders SDCC 2018 Figures Box Set ExclusiveNetflix Daredevil (Unmasked): While this figure otherwise looks like a 100% repack, it does feature one new bonus that fans were asking for: a Charlie Cox portrait Matt Murdock head. The head isn’t exactly a spitting-image likeness, but it’s the closest we’ve seen to Charlie Cox thus far from any company out there.

Jacketless Jessica Jones: The big difference between this and last year’s Marvel Knights Jessica Jones is that this time out, she’s got no leather jacket and different arms. You couldn’t just cut the jacket off the last figure since her arms were sculpted with sleeves, so I have no issue with this retool. Some people probably prefer Jessica with her jacket off—this makes sense as far as variants go.

Red Shirt Luke Cage: This is the figure in the set I’m least enamored with. While many fans have been hoping for a bullet-ridden hoodie version of Netflix Luke Cage, this is just the upcoming two-pack figure with a red shirt instead of yellow. I haven’t heard loud cries for a red shirt variant of Luke Cage, so I’m not sure that this repaint is going to be high on many peoples’ lists.

Colleen Wing: The first-ever Hasbro Marvel Legends Colleen Wing figure of any kind! I legitimately was not expecting a Colleen Wing action figure, but with Marvel Legends Claire Temple coming up, I suppose Colleen Wing shouldn’t be a surprise. This is almost unquestionably the most enticing figure in the whole SDCC 2018 Marvel Legends set, and looks like a ton of fun overall. Love it.

Iron Fist: Last but certainly not least, it’s the first Marvel Legends Netflix Iron Fist Figure. This weird hobo-looking Iron Fist is not the look for the character that I would have picked at all, but it is authentic to the Netflix series. Fans have been demanding Iron Fist, so it’s nice to know that we’ll be getting at least this one version from Hasbro.

For those who just want a Netflix Legends Iron Fist to complete their team: don’t panic. I think it’s extremely unlikely we won’t see a 6” Iron Fist Netflix figure released outside of this set, likely in a two-pack like the Luke Cage/Claire Temple set.

Marvel Legends SDCC 2018 Exclusive Box Set DefendersThe Marvel Legends Defenders Rail Authority Pack set will retail for $124.99 and be available in an awesome MTA Railcar box at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 next month. I’m not wild about that price for a set with three characters that are only mild refreshes, but hey–that is a pretty cool Subway Car box, right?

Will we ever see the Vince D’Onofrio Kingpin Marvel Legends figure that fans have been asking for? That’s one we’ll have to wait and see on.

What do you think of this year’s first-unveiled Marvel Legends exclusive set, Marvel collectors? Do you like the idea of the whole Netflix Defenders Legends set being available all in one place, or is this box set a hard pass for your collection?
