REVIEW: Playmobil Ghostbusters II Ray Stanz w/ Playmogram 3D Trap Effect

Review, Photos & Video by Andrew Jones

Playmobil heard your call when you wanted even more Ghostbusters. They knocked it out of the park last year with the introduction of their first licensed property. We grabbed the firehouse, the Ecto-1 and Stay Puft, and the value and detail was way higher than we initially expected. Shame on us. But now they’re back with Ghostbusters II versions of each of your favorites, and they have some new play innovations to go with them.

What’s new about this Ray? He comes with the standard proton pack, his goggles which can flip up and down, a trap, a bunch of pink slime test tubes, and a spectral-ometer (?) ghost detecting tool. The big “upgrade” is the darker flight suit with the 2-finger logo to match his look in the second film.

It’s great getting this version of Ray, however the big play feature in this set is the “Playmogram 3D” viewer for the trap! Yes, you get an amazing, animated, kinda 3D ghost-capturing play feature with this set. Download the free Playmogram 3D app to your phone and put your phone down on a flat surface. Plug the clear pyramid onto the trap, and rest the trap on the phone. Now pick one of four ghosts and they’ll appear to be hovering over the trap from multiple angles. Click the foot pedal and watch them get sucked into the trap. The effect is great and it’s a lot of fun to do over and over. It’s easy enough a young child can do it on their own, but sophisticated and novel enough that it’s fun to show adult-aged friends.

One thing I wanted to point out was that Playmobil really took a hint from parents a bunch of years ago and make it super easy to store all their teeny tiny parts. This series of Ghostbuster II figures come in a box that has a cereal-box style tuck tab to keep it all closed. The box is also slightly heavier and more laminated than typical Playmobil boxes of this size. However, I just recommend buying the whole firehouse playset and keeping everything set up in there.

The other three busters got the “2” treatment as well. Winston comes with his pink slime sprayer. And they updated the plug-on “steam”  to resemble pink slime. I really do recommend getting each and every set. One item of note. The ghost traps fit inside the containment unit, however you need to pop off the rubber “foot” that helps stabilize the app-Playmogram effect. It’s not hard to figure out.

I put together a small video showing two of the ghosts as they appear with the Playmogram 3D viewer. You can pick between 4 different ghosts to incarcerate. You’re even provided a small cardboard “shade” if the room isn’t dark enough. But turn off the lights, pull up the app and get to bustin’ some ghosts.

I can’t stop talking about this entire line. Everything that Playmobil grabbed from the Ghostbusters universe has come out beautifully. Even the Terror Dogs are the right balance of movie accuracy and playmobil design aesthetic. If you just want to dabble, picking up a few of these individual Ghostbuster sets is a good place to start, but you really should plan on at least grabbing the Ecto-1. The figures all fit inside!
