REVIEW: Monogram’s Anime 3D Keychain Collection – My Hero Academia

Superheroes are all the rage these days, but why should DC and Marvel have all the fun? Based on the Japanese manga by Kōhei Horikoshi, which in turn became an anime series (they all do!), My Hero Academia offers its own unique spin on the superhero genre.

The story follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without superpowers in a world where they are the norm. After being the only one to try and save his childhood bully Katsuki from a villain, the world’s greatest hero, All Might, bestows upon Izuku his own superpower. All Might then enrolls Izuku in a high school for heroes in training.

Expanding on their relatively new Anime series of collectible keychains, Monogram taps the colorful characters of My Hero Academia as their next blind bagged assortment.
DSCN5703Available now at Hot Topic, the My Hero Academia series stars 9 core characters to collect: superhero in training Izuku Midoriya, the most powerful hero All Might, the explosive Katsuki Bakugo, speedster Tenya Iida, gravity manipulator Ochaco Uraraka, “Half-Cold Half-Hot” (fire and ice) Shoto Todoroki, Tsuyu Asui and her frog powers, the unbreakable Eijiro Kirishima, and Shota Aizawa who has the ability to nullify anyone’s power by looking at them.

The two rare chase figures in this assortment include Izuku Midoriya in his school uniform and Minoru Mineta (pictured above). Minoru’s power is “Pop Off,” allowing him to produce and pull ball shaped objects from his head (!!).

This is a really creative and colorful assortment (well, all except the drab Shota Aizawa, but hey, that’s his appeal!). Like all Monogram 3D keychain assortments, there are a couple “oversized” figures in the wave, easily identified in pack by their size. The large My Hero Academia figures include the hilarious Tsuyu “Frog” Asui and her huge amphibious goggles, along with Katsuki Bakugo with his flamboyant mask that looks like an explosion (and the grenade arms are everything).

DSCN5694Each figure measures approximately 2 1/ 2 inches, however All Might stands tall at a good 3-inches. He is the most powerful hero after all!

Monogram went all out on the character design with this series. Many of the characters break the traditional template for a 3D foam figure with tons of extra flourishes, such as All Might’s huge yellow hair crest, Minoru Mineta’s oddly shaped purple head and the use of clear plastic on Shoto Todoroki to simulate ice! The latter is a really cool effect (Har!) that I hope we see more of on future figures.

My Hero Academia fans are gonna love this series. Heck, I haven’t even seen the anime and I’m in love with these. Truly some fantastic designs. Grab yours today at at Hot Topic! Who Is Your Hero?
