REVIEW: Monogram One Piece Blind Bag Collection

The great thing about anime is that there is a series theme for everyone. Want giant battling robots? Give Gundam a watch. Some ninja action? Check out Naruto. High seas pirate adventure? One Piece would be the anime for you.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King.

Continuing their recently launched series of anime-themed 3D foam key rings (read my Naruto review HERE), Monogram brings the zany cast of One Piece to fans as a new blind bag collection.

Available now at select specialty stores such as Hot Topic, this assortment debuts nine (9) core characters to collect, including the entire Straw Hat Pirates gang:

  • Monkey D. Luffy, our main hero and leader of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Roronoa Zoro, pirate and a former bounty hunter.
  • Nami, navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Usopp, sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Vinsmoke Sanji, the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Nico Robin, the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Tony Tony Chopper, the reindeer (!) doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Franky, the cyborg shipwright for the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Brook, the skeleton musician of the Straw Hat Pirates.

As with all Monogram blind bag waves, there are two rare chase figures to keep you on your collecting toes! The mystery figures in the One Piece series include the adopted older brother of Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, and Trafalgar D. Water Law, the captain of the Heart Pirates.

Like Luffy and his quest for the One Piece, you’ll need some good pirate luck to get your hands on these two characters. Out of the entire case of 24 figures I opened, only one Portgas D. Ace and one Trafalgar Law was to be found. Hey, they don’t call them “chase” figures for nothing!

Like all Monogram figural key rings, each character is made of a dense material that’s like a mix between plastic and foam. It’s some cool stuff, giving each key ring a nice heft in your hand.

Their construction also allows for some amazing detail. Two of my favorites are Franky (a HUGE figure!) and reindeer Chopper; two very unique character designs.

Actually, every character in this assortment is extremely unique – from their bold use of colors to their individual attire, hair styles and hats. Adding to their appeal is the addition of a durable metal key ring attachment. Hang ’em on display or take them with you to tote your keys!

1luffEND

Fans of One Piece won’t want to miss out on this collection. This is one of Monogram’s most elaborately designed series of 3D foam figures yet. And while you won’t know who you have until you open one, there really isn’t a bad character in the bunch. Of the 24 I opened I received an entire set of 11 (including the two chase), an entire set of the nine core characters, and four spares (Chopper, Sanji, Zora, and Nami). Happy hunting!
