REVIEW: Jada Toys Metals Die Cast Hollywood Rides DC Bombshells Catwoman & 1959 Cadillac Coupe De Ville

We’re back today with another look at a unique mashup of superheroes from an alternate world and classic American cars with the DC Comics Bombshells Catwoman & 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville from Jada Toys!  Our previous reviews of the series’ Supergirl/Ford F-100 and Wonder Woman/Chevy COE have given us a good idea about what to expect from the DC Bombshells Die Cast Hollywood Rides line, but this pack offers some unique differences.  To recap, Jada is the go-to brand for several different scales of figures (including my favorite, the tiny Nano Metalfigs) in heavy duty metal featuring everyone’s favorite licenses like DC and Marvel comics and their respective films, Disney, Harry Potter, WWE, and even die cast metal replica vehicles representing fan-favorite properties from Transformers to Ghostbusters and so much more.  Let’s go for a ride in style with the Gotham City cat burglar!

New to the Bombshells?  The DC Comics Bombshells come from a retro, 1940s inspired world created by artist Ant Lucia.  After its inception in artwork in 2011 the Bombshells have exploded into collectibles, comic books, game pieces, and beyond with unique and fun reinterpretations of classic characters, often in surprising ways.  In that alternate world “Catwoman” is Selina Digatti, Italian thief and businesswoman who sides with the Bombshells to help protect the world.  She still has a relationship with Batman, but a very different one as his mentor and teacher twenty years after the end of the war.

There aren’t any surprises when it comes to the packaging for Catwoman and her Coupe de Ville, appearing as they do in much the same box as Wonder Woman and Supergirl.  It’s a wide, sturdy box with lots of decorations and a huge window, perfect for checking out the figure and vehicle or even displaying on its own.  Behind the Catwoman figure are multiple “billboards” featuring pinup artwork of the Bombshell, perfectly setting the scene.  The front and back panels of the box have all of the branding and logos for the respective companies and toy and comic book lines, while on the back is also a lineup of other available sets featuring Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Supergirl, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy.

The Supergirl and Wonder Woman figures certainly embodied their “super” natures, with the Girl of Steel practically flying off her base and the Amazon flexing her muscles.  Catwoman here is much subtler and more understated, while still looking great.  Selina epitomizes her upper-class persona, standing in a casual but self-assured pose turned sideways with one hand on her hip and the other dangling a shiny object (jewelry? keychain?).  The high-class thief wears black high heeled shoes, gray thigh high stockings, and a scandalously short black dress complete with matching feathered shawl draped around her shoulders.  Catwoman’s hair is swept up with the hint of two “ears” and she accessorizes with black eyeglasses and a pearl necklace.  The figure looks great, the pose really works, and the pain applications on her face are excellent for the size.

Then there’s Catwoman’s ride!  The 1:24 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville is a beauty in and of itself, and somewhat of a departure from the more rough and tumble pickup trucks that came with Supergirl and Wonder Woman.  Where those were aggressive and sturdy the Caddy is refined and elegant with its classic lines and retro shapes.  The Coupe de Ville is over 8 inches long and quite weighty thanks to its share of die cast metal components.

Befitting its owner’s style, the car is primarily black with purple accents, notably on the interior and the outside of the rear fins.  Besides that, there is a lot of chrome everywhere you look, from just about the entire front and rear ends to lines running the length of the car, borders on the windows and windshields, mirrors, windshield wipers, and even the sweet wheels.  Additional details take the form of translucent red plastic on the rear lights, Cadillac symbols on the hood and trunk, Bombshells branded license plates, and Catwoman pinup art just in front of the doors.

While the other Bombshells vehicles had detailed interiors, the Coupe de Ville’s is a step above with just a huge number of things going on.  From the inside of the doors to the seats, dashboard, and beyond there is fantastic sculpted detail down to the stitching and piping.  The car has a really cool steering wheel, and there’s even a tiny but detailed speedometer sticker!  It’s also a very articulated vehicle with opening hood, trunk, and both doors (better to see the interior).

There’s nothing in the trunk but a purple space, but under the hood is a fully sculpted engine that’s all chrome too.  Lastly, like the other vehicles Catwoman’s Cadillac features very smoothly rolling wheels so you can actually play with it/drive it around.

Out of the DC Bombshells we’ve looked at so far Catwoman and her 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville are definitely among my favorite.  The figure looks great and has a ton of personality, and her car is smoking hot.  As with the others this set is available now wherever you buy your collectibles, and retails for about $25.  Highly recommended for any DC Comics fan or 1:24 scale vehicle collector, and a must-buy for Bombshells and Catwoman lovers.
