REVIEW: FOCO 8-Inch Resin Bobbleheads – IT, Friday the 13th, Westworld, More

How do you build a better bobble? FOCO has an answer.

First, start with premium resin as a base (like a fine art statue, as opposed to cheap plastic). Next, sculpt the hottest in pop culture licenses, such as Pennywise the clown from Stephen King’s IT and Batman from DC Comics. Last, but not least, make the bobble absolutely SCREAM  that character with a themed base that captures every small detail of said license. Heck, may as well throw in some unique bobble features too, like a removable mask on famed Friday the 13th slasher Jason Voorhees.

That’s FOCO’s bobbleheads in a nutshell. These are bobbles for those that take bobbleheads seriously; upping the ante on the bobblehead game with high quality, story-driven sculptures – sometimes with an added twist.

To provide a better understanding of their bobbleheads, FOCO sent over a broad selection for me to share. These include Barbara with her scary face from Tim Burton’s classic Beetlejuice, Tim Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise the clown from the 1990 Stephen King television miniseries IT, hockey masked killer Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Frank Miller’s take on DC’s Batman, and a newly formed android from the hit HBO series Westworld. All of these bobbles are currently up for pre-order directly through FOCO’s webiste HERE with shipping slated for Halloween, October 31 (How appropriate!)

As mentioned, all FOCO bobbles are made of high-quality resin and stand approximately 8-inches tall. They vary in price from $40-$55, depending on the overall size and complexity of the piece. At least I believe that’s the case. Because some of the lower priced bobbles pack the value of what I would have thought to be a $55 bobble. Let’s take a look at the $40 bobbles first and figure it out together…

Jason, Pennywise and Batman make up the $40 price range. The two horror icons are pretty much what you’d expect from a high-end resin bobble: a great representation of the character on a themed base.

DSCN0012The colorful Pennywise features all the hallmarks of a cool killer clown, right down to his pointy teeth and creepy bundle of clown balloons. As I said earlier, the bases on FOCO’s bobbles are where they truly shine; each one telling the story of the character through memorable items and locations. Pennywise’s base does this with a mini model of Derry’s sewer treatment plant facility (with IT painted on it for good measure), along with Georgie’s paper boat from the unforgettable opening scene.

Jason Voorhees takes the themed base concept even further, packing in bloody skulls, the pier on the lake where Jason drowned (with ‘Jason’ and ‘Friday the 13th logos), along with a sign that reads “Welcome To Camp Crystal Lake Blood”. Nice!

Jason also takes the actual sculpted bobble character to new heights by including an interactive feature: a removable hockey mask! This is what I meant by a $40 bobble being more like a $50 one. Attached via a powerful magnet, being able to take off Jason’s mask to reveal his hideous mug beneath is that extra bit of OOMPH that make FOCO’s bobbles really stand out. Added display options on a bobblehead? Who would have thought!

Another example of that added value comes with the Frank Miller Batman bobble. This one stands apart from the pack with a 3D Gotham City display base (and moon!) that you actually assemble. Simply insert the moon via a metal rod and pop Batman into his corresponding slot and wing nut him securely from below (A really touch there. FOCO could have just had you plug him on the base).

When completed, Batman soars across the diorama city base, his head bobbin’ in anticipation to dish out justice. A $40 bobble? I ain’t complaining, but again, this strikes me as a $45-$50 piece.

Moving up to the $50 price range we find Beetlejuice’s Barbara. This one I can easily see the price point. This is a robust bobble, featuring the most complex base of the bunch. The story the base tells here is amazing: The “Call Betelgeuse! Betelgeuse! Betelgeuse!” sign behind her, ‘Barbara Maitland’ tombstone in front of her, to the psychedelic checkered floor complete with slithering sandworm! It all speaks to Tim Burton’s incredible vision.

I also really dig the sculpt on Barbara, from her funky stretched face with eyeballs in the mouth, to the “Handbook For The Recently Deceased” she’s reading. The only problem with the Barbara Beetlejuice bobble? You’ll want to get the companion piece, the Adam Beetlejuice bobble, to go with it!

Lastly we come to Westworld, a $55 bobble that is a real head turner. The large piece captures the construction of an android from milky white synthetic muscle and flesh. It’s used effectively in the show’s  opening title sequence, setting the stage for the mind boggling sci-fi episode to come.

Like Batman, this elaborate bobble comes with some minor assembly required. This involves attaching the two silver construction ring halves to the base. Again these pieces attach very securely via provided wing nuts. Once secure, the resin halves form a circle that highlights the android bobble wonderfully. The Westworld bobblehead is striking on display and is a much welcome (and needed) collectible from the license.

Forever Collectibles’ transformation into FOCO is remarkable. A company that once specialized solely in sports collectibles has rebranded itself with an awesome portfolio of pop culture licenses and product categories. FOCO’s Eekeez (read my review HERE) aim to please collectors searching for something unique on a budget, while their BRXLZ mini brick building sets offer a fun challenge to those into construction toys.

And for those looking for a better bobble? FOCO has you covered with some of the nicest bobbleheads on the market today.
