REVIEW: Eaglemoss 13.5-inch Mega Predator

“If it bleeds, we can kill it.” Who can forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liner from the sci-fi film, Predator? I know I can’t. It was the summer of 1987 (June to be precise) on a day filled with awesome. Not only did I see Predator at my local mall theater, but I also purchased Whitesnake’s self-titled album on cassette at Sam Goody. You know, one of those perfect days. The mall theater, Sam Goody, and cassette tapes may no longer be around, but Predator (and those rockin’ Whitesnake songs) live on. Predator is a bona fide classic.

As a testament to Predator’s timeless popularity, Eaglemoss Collections is releasing the lead creature as a “Hero Collector Mega Special”. A spin-off of the Alien and Predator Figurine Collection, this large limited edition “Mega” statue is being sold as a stand alone piece, no subscription necessary, similar to what Eaglemoss did with their Mega Alien Xenomorph (read my review HERE). Fans can pick one up online exclusively at the Eaglemoss Shop priced at $142.45. It is limited to only 500 pieces produced.

DSCN1624“Mega” is certainly a good word to describe this statue. The Predator impresses on display at a towering 13.5 inches tall- almost triple the size of the Alien and Predator Collection figurines.DSCN1588I also appreciate how this is a display-ready piece, no assembly is required. Simply remove the Predator from his Styrofoam tomb and you’re good to go. Don’t forget your Certificate of Authenticity and mini-mag in the box. The former shows your statue edition number (there’s nothing written on the statue itself), while the brochure gives you some Predator history, as well as showing off other cool items in the collection.

The pose chosen for the Mega Predator is unique, not seen on any of the smaller Predator figurines. It’s taken from towards the end of the movie where the Predator unmasks itself to a stunned Dutch Schaefer (“You’re one ugly mother…”). It’s a fitting pose with duel meaning: Not only is the Predator unveiling itself to Dutch as seen in the movie, but also to you – the collector – for the first time.

1base

The heavy base on which the statue comes attached to depicts the muddy jungle floor. Cool details here include a bloody human trophy skull, complete with spinal cord, and a small scorpion. The latter is a nice nod to the scorpion scene in the movie, where Mac removes a scorpion from Dillon’s back and crushes it and later the Predator picks it up and looks at it in thermal vision (“Anytime”) .

Sculpt and paint work is solid for a collector statue at this price point. While paint on the base is a little soft, the Predator’s beady yellow eyes, mottled skin and high-tech armor and weapons more than make up for it. After all, the Predator is the star of the show .

Whether you want a large Predator statue to highlight your smaller Eaglemoss figurine collection, or simply a cool stand alone piece, the “Mega” Predator fits the bill. As a $140 collectible, the Eaglemoss Mega Predator packs a lot of bang for your buck. However, only 500 exist, so if you’re on the fence you best act now. Get to the SHOPPA!
