REVIEW: Cryptozoic Vinyl Terrorz A Nightmare On Elm Street Freddy Krueger

After finding success with their stylized DC Bombshells series, Cryptozoic Entertainment turns their talent towards a new genre: horror! Titled Vinyl Terrorz, this unique take on classic  horror characters launches with Elm Street’s famed razor gloved dream slasher, Freddy Krueger. Freddy releases this month priced at $29.99, and if fans like what they see, two variants are also available. Details on those at this end of this review!

The Vinyl Terrorz Freddy Krueger comes packaged in a handsome  closed window box. Mint-In-Box collector’s are gonna love the layout and art design on this piece, with Freddy fully visible from the front and partially from one side, while the back and one of the side panels forms Freddy’s burnt face when viewed at an angle. Pretty cool! The vinyl figure itself is housed in a plastic clam shell tray and is completely collector friendly. Just slice the one piece of tape securing the top flap and slide your new Vinyl Terrorz out for insta-display.

Decked out in his iconic red and green stripped sweater, brown pants, boots and fedora, Freddy Krueger impresses at 7 inches tall. Cryptozic’s sculptors did an excellent job of capturing the essence of Freddy in stylized plastic figure form, going with a slim, menacing profile and sneering “I’m going to get you” expression. It’s the perfect balance of cartoony and creepy; a stylized caricature that stands out as truly unique on the market.

Paint apps on this figure are handled particularly well. I love the contrast between the muted, grimy colors of Freddy’s sweater and clothing against the burnt orange color pop of his face and bare hand. Freddy’s other hand features his infamous bladed glove. Bent blades are a big Elm Street figure pet peeve of mine, so I was happy to see that each finger knife on the Vinyl Terrorz Freddy Krueger curves out nice and straight.

If I had one small critique on this figure, it’d be my desire to see the designers take Freddy’s glove to more stylized extremes: perhaps making it larger and with longer finger blades. What’s sculpted here works well with the design as a whole, but I would have liked to have seen his glove stand out more.

DSCN4713Another pet peeve of mine is when a collectible can’t stand, so I’m pleased as punch to report that Cryptozoic’s Vinyl Terrorz Freddy Krueger is designed with solid display in mind. Freddy comes permanently attached to a broad square boiler room grate; the themed base insuring the Dream Stalker stands tall without any worries of falling over. Simply plant him on a shelf and you’re good to go!

DSCN4719For fans looking to inject a bit of whimsy and fun into their Elm Street collection, Cryptozoic’s Vinyl Terrorz Freddy Krueger fits the bill. The figure ships out later this month, but for those that can’t wait, a Cryptozoic Store Exclusive “Shadow Edition” (only 350 figures produced!) is available NOW. For completists, there’s also a creepy “Skull Variant” exclusive to Hot Topic stores!
