MAFEX Spider-Man Comic Version Figure Photos & Order Info!

Medicom hit the Marvel toy collecting world with a real curveball earlier this year, when the first-ever Marvel comic-based MAFEX figure that they put up for sale was the newcomer Gwenpool. While MAFEX Gwenpool was definitely a fun and unique choice to lead off the line, she’s not exactly the kind of character that’s going to lure in tens of thousands of collectors. No, that distinction goes to the second release in the series: the MAFEX Spider-Man Comic Version figure is now up for order!

Front of Spider-Man MAFEX Figure Comic Book Version 2018When the MAFEX Marvel Comics series launched with Gwenpool, there was a sizable outcry from fans that Medicom wasn’t kickstarting the line with a mega-headliner. But worry not—the second entry in the series is arguably Marvel’s most popular character: Spider-Man!

The Spider-Man Homecoming MAFEX figure was perhaps the surprise hit most popular 6” version of that character, and now we get to see what Medicom Toy can do with a comics version of the character.Back of Comic Book Spider-Man MAFEX Ver FigureSo what does Medicom have to offer with their take on Spidey? Well, for starters, this figure will be featuring a 100% new mold that’s only for him, so the proportions will be ideal for Spider-Man and not compromised by the cost-saving necessity of shared tooling from lower-priced toy lines. (Did I say “lower-priced”? Yeah–more on the price of this in a bit.)

MAFEX Spider-Man Comic Ver Figure Web SlingingAs is frequently the case with premium import figure lines like MAFEX, articulation is the name of the game here. The amount of poseability that this Spider-Man has is off the charts–and hey, if there’s any Marvel character that needs to be flexible more than Spidey, I don’t know who it is.

Interchangeable Eyes for Medicom Spider-Man MAFEX FigureThe figure comes with two pairs of slightly different interchangeable eyes, allowing collectors to choose the look for Spidey that’s more appealing to them. The difference between the eyes isn’t huge, but which pair is on the head changes the overall feel of the action figure quite a bit.

Several weblines and also alternate hands and feet with magnets attached round out the assortment of accessories. I like the concept of the magnetic appendages, but they’re also a bit weird since no magnetic base is included with the toy.

MAFEX Spider-Man Comics Version AccessoriesThe one thing about this figure itself that I think is going to be a bit controversial is Medicom’s choice of glossy, metallic paint for the blue portions of Spidey’s costume. I can see what they’re going for with this, and it’ll likely look fine in normal lighting conditions—but the metallic sheen definitely bothers me under the bright lighting in the official photos.

Webshooting Spider-Man Marvel Comics Ver. FigureAs is often the case with import figures, there’s a dark cloud obscuring some of the light radiating from this radioactive spider. Medicom does not have a license to release comic-based Marvel figures in the United States, which means that this Spider-Man MAFEX figure will be available only via direct import from overseas or from domestic stores that import it themselves.

The figure is priced at a hefty 8,424 jpy to begin with—about $77 USD—and that’s not including import and shipping fees. So if we want this glorious Spider-Man comic book figure, we can certainly have him—but he’s gonna cost as much as over 4 Marvel Legends figures when all is said and done.

MAFEX Marvel Comics Spider-Man Figure CrawlingThe Comics Version Spider-Man MAFEX figure is now up for order via BBTS in the US, and is scheduled to be released in February 2019. Yes, you read that right: 10 months from now. That’s a pretty sizable wait time for a fully-sculpted 6” figure, but this is one incredible Spidey that just may be worth the wait.

Sound off, Spider-Man fans! Does the MAFEX Spider-Man Comic Ver. Figure raise the bar as far as 1:12 scale Spideys go? Are you willing to lay down the big bucks for this 6.1″ Spider-Man figure, or are you satisfied with the existing comic-based Marvel Legends iterations that cost about a quarter of the price?
