ADVANCE REVIEW: Jada Toys Metals Die Cast Hollywood Rides DC Comics Bombshells Supergirl & 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup

When it comes to high quality, fun, and surprisingly affordable die-cast metal toys these days no one beats Jada Toys.  Found at Target and beyond, Jada’s product offerings include several different scales of figures (including my favorite, the tiny Nano Metalfigs) in heavy duty metal featuring everyone’s favorite licenses like DC and Marvel comics and their respective films, Disney, Harry Potter, WWE, and much more.  But that’s not all, as Jada also produces die cast metal replica vehicles, again representing fan-favorite properties from Transformers to Ghostbusters and so much more.  Today we’re going to take a look at one of their upcoming additions to the Die Cast Hollywood Rides lineup featuring a vehicle and a metal figure: the DC Comics Bombshells Supergirl & 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup!

If you somehow haven’t heard about them by now, the DC Comics Bombshells come from a retro, 1940s inspired world created by artist Ant Lucia.  After its inception in artwork in 2011 the Bombshells have exploded into collectibles, comic books, game pieces, and beyond with unique and fun reinterpretations of classic characters, often in surprising ways.  Of the unique creations in that world is Bombshells Supergirl, the Kryptonian Kara Zor-El whose rocket landed in Russia.  After loyally serving her country Supergirl would defect and join the heroic Bombshells, fighting for freedom around the world.  Here she appears alongside a classic American vehicle that’s emblazoned with the colors of her costume and her image in a pinup/nose art style!

One in a series of DC Comics Bombshells ladies with cool old cars and trucks, Supergirl and her pickup arrive in a substantial window box that’s really great for displaying.  The clear plastic portal wraps around the front, top, and one side of the box while there’s another window on the opposite side; basically, you can get a great look at the figure and vehicle before you purchase.  Behind the toys, too, are some fun signs and a backdrop to evoke the world of the Bombshells.  The front and back panels have all of the branding and logos for the respective companies and toy and comic book lines, while on the back is also a lineup of other available sets featuring Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy.  It’s interesting to note that the box also features official logos for GM and Ford as the pickup is a licensed product.

The Bombshells Supergirl figure stands a little over three inches tall, permanently displayed on a black disc base.  As with all of Jada’s metal figures the superhero is quite heavy, and you won’t have to worry about her falling over on your shelf.  Supergirl is captured in a saucy pose, twisting with one leg in front of the other and hands on her hips.  She has quite a nice sculpt with her iconic Bombshells costume consisting of thigh high boots, a short skirt with wide belt adorned with her family’s crest, long gloves, and a long neck scarf fluttering behind her.  There are nice details on her outfit and especially her flowing hair.  All of the colors on the figure are right out of her comic book appearance with bold blue, red, and gold on her costume plus her blonde hair.  While I quite like the look of this figure there is something that struck me a bit odd; she has sculpted garter belts on her thighs but they were not painted, left flesh tone like the rest of her legs instead.  Not a deal breaker, certainly.

And then there’s the big old truck.  The Supergirl branded 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup is a beast of a toy, in 1:24 scale almost 8.5 inches long and weighing one and a quarter pounds!   I’m not really a car guy (in real life or in toy collecting), but I found this toy super impressive both in its size and heft and its level of detail that is what I can only assume is accurate to the original vehicle.  The truck has the same colors as the superhero though in slightly more subdued shades, a wraparound blue at the bottom and red on the top divided by a gold stripe.  The truck’s bed is black, as are the running boards, while chrome shows up on the rims, exhausts, license plate frame, mirrors, and front end.  Then of course there are the aforementioned pinup images of Supergirl on the doors.  Then there’s a whole world of small details!

Look through the wheels to see brakes and calipers, and turn the truck over for a look at exhausts, axles, etc.  The tailgate lowers and locks in place, and the reverse-hinged hood opens to reveal a highly detailed chrome engine.  The doors also open so you can check out the fully realized interior complete with handles, knobs, and speakers on the doors plus the seats, steering wheel, shifter, pedals, and more.  Both license plates feature the Bombshells logo and there’s a Supergirl “S” shield on the hood.  Jada’s figures aren’t articulated and so no one is actually going to sit in the truck, but it’s a really cool toy that will look at home alongside action figures or other scaled die-cast vehicles.

Supergirl and her truck arrives next month in January with the second wave of Bombshells and their vehicles, retailing for about $25.  For fans of the Bombshells and especially Kara this set is highly recommended, giving you a nice little figure of the character along with a unique themed collectible in the vintage pickup truck.  And if you’re a collector of 1:24 scaled vehicles AND Bombshells well then this is pretty much perfect for you!  Companies like Jada are really doing a fantastic job bringing the Bombshells and their iconic designs to the collectibles world and this is a great example of that.  Get yours in early 2019 wherever you buy your superhero collectibles!
